Orogeny is the way in which continental mountains are created – a continental plate crumples and is pushed upwards to form one or more mountain ranges. The word “orogeny” comes from Ancient Greek (óros, ‘mountain’ + génesis, ‘creation’).

The Laramide Orogeny, about 70 million years ago, was responsible for raising the Canadian Rockies during a period of intense tectonic activity. Subsequent glacial erosion resulted in jagged, sharply pointed mountains separated by wide U-shaped valleys – the backdrop for many a gorgeous mountain photo here in Alberta.

The sedimentary limestone and shale that make up the Canadian Rockies can be seen as layered patterns of blues and purples on the mountainsides, and they are the inspiration for this bi-coloured stole. The bands of colour (2) are knit in decreasing repeats adding a little visual interest to this stole.

This pattern has not been test knit. Please reach out if you see any errors in the pattern or charts. I try my best to make sure the pattern is accurate, but I sometimes make mistakes. Thank you for your patience. Enjoy!
