Orthodox Cross Doily
This elegant lace doily features an Orthodox Christian style cross, with trefoils at the end of each arm. The trefoil motif repeats in the inner and outer borders. Yellow contrast rows decorated with picots evoke the gold ornamentation of many Orthodox icons and relics.
This pattern is worked in three parts. The cross is made first, beginning by working into chain stitches, then working in rounds around the perimeter of the cross. The inner border is a shell braid, worked in short rows, and joined to the back of the cross with front-post stitches to make it look neater in the finished doily. Then the outer border is worked in rounds with right side facing, as normal.
It uses 60 yards of white and 40 yards of yellow size 10 crochet thread, working with a 1.5 mm hook.
Notable stitches used:
2-ch and 3-ch picot
front post single crochet, double crochet and triple crochet
I also have a Celtic Cross Doily which finishes to the same size.
