UPDATE 01/24: the second pdf file contains an enlarged version of the colourwork chart - cut out and tape together the pages for better chart viewing.

The cowl is knit in the round and in one piece. The outer colourwork shell is worked first starting from a provisional cast-on and using stranded stockinette in two colours. Continuing seamlessly with one colour, the inner lining is worked in simple stockinette, before the working stitches are grafted together with the live stitches from the provisional cast-on using Kitchener stitch. It should be noted that the colourwork chart contains no repeat motif and is worked once through in its entirety. The chart is given in 10-round segments to help you keep on track. Whilst this pattern requires a certain degree of attention and concentration, the end result is a fabulous spiral chaos design!

Approx 100g of main colour and 40g of contrasting colour Studio Donegal Darnie fingering weight yarn was used for a cowl with significant height - obviously you can reduce the height by knitting fewer rows of the colourwork chart if you wish.

Pattern inspiration
The dynamic and oscillatory spirals produced during a B-Z chemical reaction are fascinating and hypnotic. As a graduate chemistry student setting up the experiment for fun and watching as it evolved, transformed and reformed, it seemed almost magical. As inspiration for a chaotic, non-repeating design it is dizzy perfection and this spiral colourwork pattern captures a snapshot of oscillating chemical non-equilibrium.
