Outgard is a lacy cowl with mock cables and nupps (Estonian bobbles). It is designed to use 100 g of fingering weight yarn but can be easily adjusted for more/less yardage.

The pattern is charted. A link is provided for the nupp technique used in the original cowl, but the nupps can be omitted or replaced with a more conventional bobble if desired.

Instructions are provided to modify the height of the cowl as well as its circumference. A plain ribbing alternative to the picot edge is also available.

Erratum: If you downloaded this pattern before CET 18.30 on 25 October 2018, there is a missing symbol in the chart legend. The dash on the chart means purl. This has been corrected in v2.

Outgard is part of my collection Among the Æsir, a series of cowls and scarves named for the Norse gods and their world. Útgarðar (the Outyards) is the home of the giant Útgarða-Loki, who challenges Thor to drain a drinking horn. Unbeknownst to Thor, the horn contains not mead but the seas. While he doesn’t manage to drink it all, the amount that he does drink results in the creation of the tides.
