Over the Rooftops
The name for the Over the Rooftops blanket knitting pattern is inspired by the words in “Step in Time”…a song from one of my favorite movies Mary Poppins. Read more about this pattern on my website.
The Over the Rooftops blanket is knit with super bulky weight yarn so it is quick to knit on big needles.
Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on US size 15 circular knitting needles.
If you prefer worsted or Aran weight yarn… please see my Look for Happiness blanket knitting pattern.

DIRECTIONS FOR FIVE SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…
XL: 57” wide x 60” long
Large: 48.75” wide x 48.75” long
Medium: 43” wide x 45” long
Small (Crib/Lap): 37.25” wide x 40” long
Baby: 31.25” wide x 35” long
Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 1.25” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.
SKILL LEVEL: Easy
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
For best results…blocking of finished blanket is highly recommended. See my blog post for tips on blocking as well as before and after photos.
SUPER BULKY YARN:
XL: 1400 - 1500 yards
Large: 1000 - 1100 yards
Medium: 720 - 780 yards
Small (Crib/Lap): 625 - 675 yards
Baby: 425 - 450 yards
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.
This pattern will work well with many super bulky weight yarns. For best appearance, use a yarn with good stitch definition.
Chenille yarns are not the best option for this pattern because the stitch definition is too soft.
I used Lion Brand Hometown in the color “Dallas Grey” for the blanket shown in the photos. The pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Thick & Quick.
You may also experiment with knitting two strands of bulky or worsted weight yarn together…remember you will need about twice as much yardage!
The texture of the pattern will show up best with solid color yarn.
GAUGE:
Stockinette stitch with US size 15 needles: approximately 8 stitches & 12 rows = 4”
CIRCULAR NEEDLES:
In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are highly recommended. I use circular knitting needles 38” in length for larger blankets. For a crib or baby blanket, circular needles in a shorter length could be used.
This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.
Written pattern with row by row instructions.
