My favorite shopping bag ever was a string bag I bought in Edinburgh, Scotland, that had only one wide handle to sling over your shoulder. The soft weave sit comfortably on the shoulder without gouging, even with a full load from Safeway (yes, they have Safeway in Scotland).

In the way of all cotton string bags, it eventually wore out and I’ve missed it ever since. This is my attempt to recreate my favorite string bag.

Published at last. I’ve checked the directions over several times, but please let me know if you find an error. I’ve been enjoying making this pattern over and over now that I’ve got it figured out.
