Over The Top describes the unique construction of these mittens, which I developed after making a few pairs of socks with short-row heels.

As a city cyclist and walker, I have found convertible mittens essential to my cold-weather wardrobe. First, as mittens, they are the best thing for staving off chill winds. As convertibles, they enable me to quickly grab my keys from my pocket, slip one finger out to work my smartphone, or knit while waiting at a bus stop. (The thumb-cap is particularly important for on-the-go knitting.) When I don’t need my mittens, I can slide them up my arms so they are of the way – and they won’t fall out of my coat pocket.

Sizing is unisex to accommodate humans of all sizes, and with instructions for adjustments. The wide range of sizes allows you to use a different weight yarn and adjust accordingly, if you know how to do that.

This thumb construction – either with a little cap or enclosed – ensures a warmer thumb than the typical top with cinched stitches. In my experience, the thumb – all by its lonesome -- is the coldest part of the hand. So, this little short-row cap is both a little warmer and a lot more useful.
