Owl Beanie
Happy autumn! Get 50% off of all of my patterns until September 30, 2024! No coupons necessary, just add to cart! Thank you for your support!
The Owl Beanie features a ribbed, double-folded brim, while the body of the hat uses a broken-rib pattern. It was named after my boyfriend, whom I have nicknamed, “Owl”.
YARN
One of the following or any yarn that meets the gauge below. If you would like to make your hat wider or longer than the pattern states, please note that this will increase the yardage/meterage required to complete the hat.
Blown/netted-tube yarns (more light-weight, airy feel)
- 1 skein of Wool and the Gang’s Feeling Good Yarn
- 1-2 skeins of CaMaRose DK’s Snefnug (creates a denser fabric than Feeling Good Yarn)
- Note: I had less than 1.1 yards (1 metre) of yarn left with the one skein of Snefnug, so if you would like to use this yarn, it would be best to have two, just in case
Heavy Worsted (heavier, creates a thicker, denser fabric)
- 1-2 skeins of The Meriwool by We Are Knitters (Most testers got away with 1 skein. Some testers were close to frogging their swatches in order to complete the hat.)
Other yarns used by my lovely testers (pattern gauge met unless otherwise stated):
- Drops Garnstudio’s Drops Big Merino (2 skeins)
- James C. Brett’s Marble Chunky (½ skein)
- Morris & Sons’ Estate 8 Ply (1½ skeins)
- Rowan’s Felted Tweed (1½ skeins)
- Quince and Co’s Osprey (1 skein)
- I Love This Wool!’s Naturals (½ skein; gauge: 14 sts, 20 rows)
- KnitPicks’ Wonderfluff (1-1½ skeins; gauge: 14 sts, 20 rows)
- Drops Garnstudio’s Drops Air (1 skein; gauge: 18 sts, 22 rows but with US 10/6 mm needles instead of US 9/5.5 mm needles)
- A great place to find yarn substitutes is yarnsub.com.
KNITTING NEEDLES
Both of the needle sizes (or size/s required to meet gauge).
- US 8/5.0 mm double pointed needles (or circular needles; magic loop may be necessary)
- US 9/5.5 mm double pointed needles (or circular needles; magic loop may be necessary)
- Note: Since We Are Knitters’ The Meriwool (and other heavy worsted yarn) creates a thicker and denser fabric than the blown/netted-tube yarns listed above, I would opt to use US 9/5.5 mm knitting needles throughout the pattern instead, so the brim is stretchier
NOTIONS
- 1 stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round (BOR)
- 1 tapestry needle
GAUGE
- 16-17 sts and 22 rows in stockinette/stocking stitch on US 8/5.5 mm needles.
- The Meriwool had a gauge of 16 sts and 22 rows Feeling Good Yarn had a gauge of 17 sts and 22 rows after blocking.)
- Please make a gauge swatch using 5.5 mm knitting needles and wash/block your swatch before knitting your hat.
MEASUREMENTS
- This hat is approximately 9” (22.9 cm) long.
- Once blocked, this hat can stretch to approximately 9.5” (24.1 cm) long.
- Unstretched, it is 18” (45.7 cm) in circumference.
- Stretched, it can fit up to 22” (55.9 cm) to 23” (58.4 cm) in circumference (some testers’ hats could stretch to the latter measurement). Note: Trying on the hat (or having your model of choice) as you go is recommended to determine the fit.
ADJUSTMENTS
There are notes on how to adjust the length and width of the hat in the pattern.
