Oxbow
by Leah Batt
The Trancas Street Bridge in Napa, California, is seventeen miles away from the Pacific Ocean, but twice daily, high tides carry its saltwater upriver from the San Pablo Bay. Changing tides combined with seasonal rainfall make the river freshwater in winter and salty in summer. The ebbs and flows of the Napa River were a crucial part of my childhood.
This rectangular shawl is my tribute to that living river. It comprises a band of openwork curving along spans of corrugated ribbing—a river winding among the furrowed rows of agriculture, coming down from the mountain to find its way to the sea.
Sample used 5 skeins in Ciel OR approximately 685 yards 625 meters of DK-weight yarn
