Painted Desert Cable Throw
We love to go on road trips, so I created this throw/lap blanket for us to bring on our trips. The throw is named after the Painted Desert at the Petrified Forest National Park, one of the most spectacular national parks we’ve been to.
This pattern is worked flat with gorgeous giant cables, bobbles in between the cables, and blackberry stitch borders. The many techniques included in this pattern may seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, but rest assured, I have included very detailed written instructions as well as knitting charts for each section of the blanket. I have no doubt you will get the hang of the pattern in no time and will make a gorgeous blanket of your own in the blink of an eye.
The throw is knitted using bulky weight yarn, so it is exceptionally warm and squishy. I used a machine washable yarn since I will be bringing it on trips, but you can very well make it with any bulky weight yarn as you please. The gorgeous cables would also make this the perfect decorative addition to your home or office!
For the throw in the photos, I used Lion Brand Hue + Me in Saffron with 6.5mm circular knitting needles. Each skein is 125g and the throw featured in the photos used 8 skeins. I chose this yarn and this color as I plan to bring the blanket with me on trips, so I needed a yarn that is machine washable (this yarn is a wool blend with 80% acrylic and 20% wool) and a color that hides dirt.
I also recommend We Are Knitters Petite Wool, which is more elastic as it is 100% wool and would be the perfect yarn, if you wish to make an indoor/decorative throw.
Alternatively, Red Heart Super Saver is also a great choice if you are sensitive to animal fiber. This yarn is super affordable and machine washable, so it would be perfect for making blankets. You can achieve the bulky weight by holding two strands together, but the lack of animal fiber does make it a little less elastic than the other two yarns mentioned above.
The finished product should measure around 3 feet wide, 4 feet long. Feel free to adjust the size of the throw to your liking by changing the number of repeats for the main pattern.
