The second pair of socks for the 27, a sock collection ebook is currently available at a 25% discount with the code Basquiat, valid until 9 June 2024 SAST. Thank you for all the love and support you have shown to me and the 27, a sock collection ebook!

The inspiration for this ebook was three members of the 27 club, many of the members of this group have touched my life, albeit in different ways and I wanted to explore the impact of artist and popular culture through a series of socks that loosely play off the artists and musicians, but more importantly the lasting impact that has transcended their work.

Basquiat:
I first encountered the work of Jean-Miquel Basquiat in my 3rd year Postmodern Art class, the raw emotionality of the Neo-expressionist artist touched me to the core. His bold use of colour, the graffiti art style, along with the references that touched on art, music and culture left an impression, along with the artist who made them. What touched me most about the work of Basquiat was the haunting affect his work produced and how the embedded emotionality touched on issues of liminality and marginalization.
For this sock I wanted to capture the emotion and affect that was inherent within Basquiat’s work along with the artist’s bold use of colour, and the jarring nature of his artistic composition. So, I chose vivid colour for the stripes, and a bright, almost neon yellow, along with a simple textured design that echoed the simple visual imagery of the graffiti art style.

Materials:
• One 2.25mm / US size 1 circular needle 100cm / 40” in length for magic loop or set of DPNs, or size needed to meet the required gauge.
• Stitch markers (2), one of which is used to mark the beginning of round.
• Tapestry needle for sewing in threads.
• Blocking materials.
• Fingering weight (sock weight) yarn, exact yardage may vary and is dependent on size and foot length. A 100g skein of sock yarn of the Main Colour along with 20g mini skeins of sock yarn in each Contrast Colour should be suitable for most adult sizes.
