The Palais Garnier stole evokes the fancy frills and gilded molding of the Paris opera house with its alternating stripes of lacy openwork framed by rippling lines of garter stitch. The stole is worked flat from end to end with an easy-to-memorize stitch pattern.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but using a different weight of yarn or needle size will affect the size of the finished stole.

The size of the Palais Garnier stole can be easily adjusted to accommodate different preferences. Change the length of the stole by adding or subtracting repeats of the lace pattern, or alter the width by casting on more or fewer stitches in groups of 12. Consider expanding the stole into a baby blanket by casting on double the stitches. Changing the size of the stole will affect the amount of yarn needed.

A note on yarn:
The sample uses a neutral main color with a set of five mini skeins. Knitters might also pair a main color with a single contrasting yarn, an integrated gradient, or as many contrasting colors as one would like. This project could be a great way to stashbust your fingering weight leftovers. Each contrasting color stripe of 12 rows requires approximately 22 yds / 20 m of yarn.

265 yds / 242 m of a main color and 540 yds / 494 m in total of contrasting color(s) in a fingering weight yarn

US size 4 / 3.75 mm straight or circular needles

Gauge:
33.5 sts x 28 rows = 4” / 10 cm in lace pattern after blocking
Exact gauge is not critical but will affect the size of the finished stole and the amount of yarn needed.
