Pansy Flower, RIGHT HANDED
There is also a LEFT HANDED version of this tutorial which can be found HERE.
You will not find a more realistic Pansy pattern anywhere. When you use natural looking colors it looks real at first glance! They make lovely appliques & brooches or attach a wire stem and make a bouquet of Spring flowers. Get started today with this instant download!
NEW! This tutorial has been completely remade with better photos, more concise instruction and a much smaller files size. There are now 4 versions included, the basic smooth pansy, the lacy ruffled pansy, the thick wavy ruffled edged pansy and the newest, the contrasting picotee wavy ruffled edge pansy.
You will also receive a short tutorial on how to make the sepals and calyx. Not only does it makes the back of the pansies as realistic as the front, it solves the problem of how to attach a stem wire.
English language and US crochet terms only.
Each color uses a continuous thread so there won’t be million ends to deal with!
This comprehensive photo tutorial pattern (12 pages, 71 photos, 4.86MB) includes all 4 versions. The calex & stem tutorial is 3 pages, 21 photos, 1.33 MB.
Also included is a condensed text-only excerpt of just the written instructions from the photo-heavy smooth pansy tutorial, which all the others are based on. One page (8KB) and no photos saves ink! The numbered steps correspond to the photos of the tutorial which you can view on your favorite device if you prefer not to print the full tutorial.
You will need a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or PDF-XChange to view or print the files.
Materials:
DMC Cebelia crochet thread or other tightly wound thread, yellow & two other colors, and appropriately sized hook.
Size 30 thread & 1.25mm hook
OR
Size 20 thread & 1.5mm hook
OR
Size 10 thread & 1.75mm hook.
Additionally, a hook one size bigger if making the ruffled/wavy versions
Gauge:
Not essential
Made with size 30 thread the smooth pansy is roughly 1.25” across (depending on tension) and only slightly bigger if made with size 20 thread. The biggest difference is the texture of the petals, not the size. Made with size 10 thread the pansy is roughly 1.5”+ across.
The lacy version & heavy edged versions will be 20% - 25% bigger and the picotee edge will be about 40% bigger.
You need the following skills:
- chain
- slip stitch
- single crochet
- double crochet
- triple crochet
- double triple crochet
- triple triple (ruffled version)
- working back loop only
- controlling tension
- accuracy & attention to detail
- patience! (ruffled version)
The smooth pansy is appropriate for an intermediate crocheter. The ruffled pansies are more awkward to make and may be more appropriate for the experienced crocheter. More important than a specific experience level is patience and the ability to follow instructions.
I usually make these pansies with two colors & white and add a little dye to the lighter outer portion of the petals. Step-by-step instructions for dyeing are not included in the pattern. A resource where you can purchase supplies and get information on the process is included on the 1st page. You can also use other dyes as well as fabric paints & markers. Of all the realistic flowers I make, these pansies are by far the easiest to add color to. It’s fun and I really hope you will give it a try!
