In honor of my daughter’s wedding, I designed a shawl inspired by the 1,000 origami cranes strung throughout the wedding venue -- a symbol of eternal good luck!

Paper cranes is an asymmetric shaped shawl with a simple eyelet pattern. While the eyelet “cranes” appear random, in fact my oldest daughter and artist, Amalia, worked with me to place the “cranes” like falling water droplets, in the Japanese tradition. Knit edge-to-edge using simple yarn overs to make each eyelet crane, this paper crane is knit in Seven Sisters Arts Astrid on US #4 needles -- the resulting fabric is amazing, with perfect softness and drape!

Length 63”/160cm
Narrow edge 6 ½”/16.5cm
Wide edge 20”/51 cm

YARN

• Seven Sisters Yarn Astrid 70% merino, 30% silk; 438 yds per 100g skein), 3 skeins or
• Approx 1050yds/975m fingering weight yarn.

NEEDLES
Size 4 US (3.5mm) 32”/80cm circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
28 sts and 36 rows = 4”/10cm in St st (blocked).
While exact gauge is not critical, variation in gauge will alter final measurements.

CONSTRUCTION
Worked flat from narrow hem to wide hem.
