Paper Snowflakes Hat
When I was little I liked to cut snowflakes out of paper, though I wasn’t very good at it. I often ended up with awkward squares and rectangles, but it was fun to try!
This hat reminds me of rows of beautifully cut paper snowflakes. The motif is the traditional Norwegian Selbu rose which I love to incorporate into so many of my designs. The crown decreases from a pretty star. The brim of the hat can be done with a picot edge as shown, or with a plain or ribbed edge for a more unisex look. There are directions for all three ways.
This hat is knit in the round. I like to use a circular needle, but double pointed needles are also great if you prefer them. I include two charts, one with light color dominant, and one with dark color dominant. I find it easier to work from charts that match the color values that I’m using rather than trying to swap the colors in my head while I’m knitting. I think you will, too.
Many people like to knit stranded color work in 100% wool yarn. Wool tends to be a little “sticky” so it does work well, but I’ve had success using many different yarns. Wool blended with other fibers such as alpaca or acrylic have worked fine for me. If you are sensitive to wool (like me) you can even use acrylic yarn, even though some people will say you can’t. Experiment to see what works for you.
I am always available for pattern support and knitting help if you need it, just ask! Also, I love to see pictures of what you make with my patterns. Please share!
