Papil Mitts
These mitts were inspired by a tin containing caramel wafers that was given to me by two Dutch friends during Shetland Wool Week 2016. We met up during a workshop I was teaching at a venue in Papil, Burra Isle and they were also staying in a cottage nearby. Using Shetland knitting techniques together with the pattern and colours inspired by the tin from the Netherlands this design celebrates the links we have with knitters all over the world and the amazing community of craftspeople we belong to. As someone once said to me “we are all joined together with yarn and thread”.
The mitts are knitted in the round, a stocking stitch edging with eyelets is made at the beginning and the end of the project which is turned back to form picot edgings. The cuff is knitted and separated from the main part of the mitt with a few rounds of purl. An afterthought thumb is worked that is completed at the end of the project.
The mitts use small quantities of yarn for the tulips so are a good way to use small pieces of fingering from your stash.
