THE INSPIRATION

When I originally came up with this design, I just cast on and let the colors do the talking! I knew I wanted to do some sort of colorwork with this yarn, and the gorgeous pattern featured here emerged as I was knitting. The word “Paragon” means “something viewed as a model of excellence,” and the classic diamond shapes pointing upward reminded me of this concept.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Knit from the bottom up in the round, this pattern uses a variety of different knitting techniques to help you master the basics. The pattern includes detailed instructions and plenty of pictures to help you along the way, so it is perfect for those who are new to knitting in the round and who want to learn how to knit using multiple colors. You will need to know how to knit, purl, and how to do the long-tail cast on; and I will teach you the rest. It’s all quite simple! I recommend this pattern for beginner knitters.

THE YARN

I designed this project with Cascade Yarns Baby Alpaca Chunky, and I highly recommend it! The texture is lofty, lightweight, and very, very soft. I used “Como Blue” for Color 1 and “Damson” for Color 2.

MATERIALS

  • Approx 62 yards (57 m) of bulky weight (5) yarn for Color 1 and 15 yards (14 m) of bulky weight yarn for Color 2

  • US size 13 16” circular knitting needles

  • Stitch marker (optional)

  • Tapestry needle

MEASUREMENTS

Approx 8.5” (22 cm) tall and 18” (46 cm) around at the brim (don’t worry - it’s very stretchy!)

GAUGE

12 sts x 16 rounds = 4” (10cm) in stockinette stitch
