If you have a special skein of a gradient or variegated yarn, this cozy cowl gives you the chance to showcase it.

The Parapet Cowl begins at the top with an easy triangle of stockinette stitch. The triangle is then joined in the round, and a mosaic border is added, where a combination of stripes and slipped stitches allows the contrast color to shine through. Strategically placed increases create an eye-catching focal point and give the cowl a graceful bandana shape.

Instructions are provided for both worsted-weight and bulky yarn, and you can adjust the size of the neck opening as you go for your ideal fit.

The instructions are fully written, with an optional chart. Two versions of the chart are provided — one with a dark main color, and one with a light main color — so you can choose the one that matches your colors best.

Sizes: Worsted (Bulky)
Circumference at top edge: 19”/48 cm
Circumference at bottom edge: 34 (36)”/86 (91) cm
Height in front: 17 (20)”/43 (51) cm
Height in back: 6 (8)”/15 (20) cm

Blocked Gauge (worked flat)

Worsted Weight: 16 stitches and 22 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 7/4.5 mm needle
Bulky: 13.5 stitches and 19 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 10/6 mm needle

Yarn

Worsted-Weight Version:

• Approximately 165 yds/151 m in main color, AND
• Approximately 55 yds/50 m in contrast color.
  The rust/turquoise sample was knitted using one skein of a gradient yarn (Freia Shaniko Superwash Worsted in the Canyon colorway) for both colors. Instructions on how to divide the skein are included in the pattern.

Bulky Version (or worsted-weight yarn held double):

• Approximately 145 yds/133 m in main color AND
• Approximately 50 yds/46 m in contrast color. The white/blue-green sample was knitted in 29 Bridges Bulky Merino in the Au Naturel and Patina colorways.

Note: The mosaic pattern is clearest when there is plenty of contrast between the two colors.

Tools

• Worsted-Weight Version: US 7/4.5 mm circular needle (or size necessary to achieve worsted-weight gauge), preferably 24”/60 cm long
• Bulky Version: US 10/6 mm circular needle (or size necessary to achieve bulky gauge), preferably 24”/60 cm long
• 4 Stitch markers, including 1 in a unique color or shape
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• Pins for blocking
