Partially striped shawlette
If you’re like me, you have plenty of partial balls of fingering weight yarn in your favourite colours sitting in your stash. This is the perfect pattern for stashbusting and using up those partials, plus a little laceweight brushed suri or mohair yarn. It makes a long shallow crescent shawlette designed to wear wrapped around your neck. Just right for the in-between weather.
The knitting is simple - manageable for a beginner knitter but also good for an experienced knitter when you just want a nice soothing knit. It is knit in garter stitch, with some stripes to keep it interesting, and a delicate lace edging. The lace border is easy – I promise.
My suri stripes are subtle and blend into my stripes of contrast colour, but you can choose to go bold too. You can see the lovely projects made by my testers for ideas.
SUPPLIES
Two contrasting colours of fingering weight yarn and a little brushed laceweight suri or mohair. You can choose a laceweight that matches either C1 or C2, or you can go for a bold contrast. The laceweight is also used for your border.
I have added a safety margin on top of my yarn usage.
Main colour (C1) fingering weight: approximately 250 yards (230 m).
Contrast colour (C2) fingering weight: approximately 120 yards (110 m).
Accent colour (C3) laceweight: approximately 55 yards (50m).
GAUGE
16 stitches in blocked garter stitch in 4” (10 cm) using US 6 (4.00mm) needles or size to obtain gauge. Differences in gauge will affect yarn usage and overall size of your shawlette.
You will need a long circular needle to accommodate your stitches as the shawlette grows, but you will be working back and forth in rows.
Finished dimensions after blocking: 71” (180cm) long from tip to tip and 11” (28cm) deep at widest point.
