Paso Nogal
Paso Nogal is a two-color asymmetrical triangular shawl that shows off simple garter stripes, a nubby textured stitch, and lovely cabled lace. It has a tidy selvage and is finished with a picot bind off. Although parts of it are a bit challenging, Paso Nogal also satisfies the meditative experience that knitters crave. Knit it with a cashmere/merino blend for a lightweight shawl that is still cozy and warm.
Needles & Notions
US size 7 (4.5 mm) 32 in/81 cm circular needle (or size to obtain gauge), cable needle.
Yarn & Yardage
756 yd/691 m heavy fingering weight merino or blend.
Color A: (Darker color) 378 yd/346 m. (Sample shawl used 293 yd/268 m.)
Color B: (Lighter Color) 378 yd/346 m. (Sample shawl used 307 yd/280 m.)
Suggested Yarn
Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock (80% Superwash Merino Wool/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon,
378 yd/346 m/115 g); 1 skein each:
Color A: Tactical
Color B: Paris Train
Gauge: In garter stitch, 16 sts and 34 rows per 4 in/10 cm (blocked).
Note that a looser gauge than noted (stitch or row) will result in the use of more yarn.
Please note: Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock is a very thick fingering weight yarn. I would not suggest using a lightweight fingering. If you do, you will want to go down a needle size or two and your finished size may be smaller. Substituting with a sport weight yarn would be preferable.
Final Measurements
95 in/241 cm wingspan, 19.5 in/49.5 cm depth. Measurements taken after blocking.
I have knitted another version of this shawl with regular fingering weight yarn and made some modifications to the pattern to make up for the smaller yarn size. If interested check out my project notes here:
