Paston
Sitting on the grass, feeling the warm sunshine on your skin, mindlessly picking daisies and joining them into a chain - for me, it’s the ultimate image of contentment. But here’s my question for you… have you ever tried knitting a daisy chain? It’s much less dependent on the weather and, if you aren’t already familiar with the kind of peaceful contentment that comes with knitting and then cosying up in a pair of handknit socks, you are in for a real treat!
The Paston socks are worked from the toe up - mostly just soothing stockinette stitch in the round. The chunks of stranded colourwork break up the plain stockinette nicely but are small enough to not feel too daunting. (It’s also worth noting that each row only uses 2 colours at a time and the pattern repeat is fairly short, with no long floats to manage, so this would make an ideal introduction to stranded colourwork for anyone new to the technique.) The pattern also includes detailed instructions on how to work a German short row heel but this can easily be substituted for an alternative heel, if you would prefer.
