Pat-a-cake Baby Mittens
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker’s man. Bake me a cake as fast as you can…… We all know the classic childhood rhyme. These mittens are knit at a tighter than normal gauge to make a cozy fabric that keeps out chills, ensuring that your little one’s pat-a-cake makers are ever ready for rhymes and giggles. Embellished with flowers at the cuffs, have fun playing with different color combinations. These of course can be left off for mittens that would suit a boy. You could still play with colors by trying different stripe patterns.
Mittens are worked in the round on double pointed needles, so there’s no seaming required. Includes instructions for three sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-12 months. They are made without a thumb for ease of putting onto tiny, wriggly hands. =)
I’m not normally a big fan of acrylic yarn, but Red Heart’s Luster Sheen proved to be an exception to that rule. It has a great silky smooth hand, doesn’t pill, comes in vibrant colors and is machine washable, which is a definite plus when it comes to baby items. It’s labeled as a sport weight, but I personally think it knits up more like a fingering weight – something to consider if you’re substituting yarn. Yarns with a recommended gauge in the range of 27 to 29 sts = 4” would work well.
