Pattern description from Folk Style: “Gayle Bunn took inspiration from old quilts made from square blocks of bright fabrics that had faded over time for the patchwork squares in this cropped jacket. ‘I love vintage textiles and this patchwork is meant to suggest old herringbone tweed mixed with checks and classic argyles for a knitterly touch,” explains Gayle. The cropped and curvy shape is a fresh take on women’s Spencer jackets of the early nineteenth century. The color work is achieved through a combination of Fair Isle and intarsia techniques.“

Needles:

• Body - size 8 (5 mm)
• Edging - size 7 (4.5 mm): 32” (80 cm) circular (cir).
• Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notes from Folk Style:

• Work the Patchwork chart in stockinette stitch intarsia, using separate lengths of yarn for each color section and twisting yarns together between blocks to avoid leaving holds. In adjacent blocks of the diagonal and grid patterns, the red and green yarns can be stranded all the way across both blocks to reduce the number of ends to weave in. The tan and teal background colors for these blocks can be worked with a separate strand of yarn for each block. for the argyle blocks, use separate lengths of yarn for the center diamond and the red background on each side; do not strand the red across the back of the large diamond and do not strand the argyle yarns across the back of any other blocks.
• If desired, the single dark brown stitches of the argyle Xs and centers dots in the grid pattern of the Patchwork chart may be worked in the background color and embroidered in duplicate stitch after the knitting is finished, using the chart as a guide.
