Patchwork-Sunflower Jacket
Pattern description from Knitting in America: “Inspiration for this slightly flared jacket came from a picture of the adventurous Madeline, a character in a series of children’s books by Ludwig Bemelmans, who wore a blue coat of similar shape. Louise chose seven shades of Dale of Norway Heilo, a four-ply worsted wool yarn, figured out how she would break the jacket into patches, then started swatching and playing with eight different embroidery stitches. The hardest part, she said, was finding stitches that would show up and had dimension. She settled on four stitches for the outlining of the patches - feather, fern, spine chain, and wheat ear - and cross-stitch for the sunflowers. The pattern appears on page 194.”
