A sweater inspired by Paul Klee’s paintings. You will play with colors and develop their combinations with square motifs. You can mix and match many colors, or use just a few, for example 4 to 6 colors. For the sample sweater’s combo, I picked up the colors you can find in the painter’s palette.

I knitted the sample sweater with Spindrift from Jamieson’s of Shetland, frequently used for Fair Isle sweaters. Available in a range of over 200 shades including many heathered ones, this beautiful yarn allows you to knit garments in nuanced colors like those used in paintings.

The sweater is light thanks to a gauge much looser than that of traditional Fair Isle sweaters. If you are used to stranded knitting, this loose gauge may surprise you. If you have trouble achieving the pattern gauge, you can work with a thicker yarn or add a lace weight yarn. Using two yarns with different colors together will add depth to the shades and produce a lovely combination. I hope you enjoy your color work!

Needles

You need 3 different size of circular needles.

• small size needle for ribbing: 2.75 mm / US 2 /JP 2
• middle size needle for stockinette stitch: 3 mm / US 2.5 /JP 3
• large size needle for color work: 3.75 mm / US 5 /JP 5(or 6)

Gauge

• 22 sts x 34 rows = 10 cm /4“, in stockinette stitch with middle size needle after wet blocking.
• 22 sts x 27 rows = 10 cm /4“, in colorwork pattern in round with large size needle after wet blocking.

Notions

(8, 8, 8, 8)(8, 8, 8, 8)(8, 10, 10, 10)(12, 12, 12, 12) stitch markers (I recommend to use a different color for EOR), waste yarn, tapestry needle, tape measure (is very useful if you will try on the sweater during knitting)、locking stitch markers (safety pin markers).

パウル・クレーの絵をイメージして編んだセーターです. 四角い模様の中で色の組み合わせを育てながら編んでいきます. たくさんの色を使ってもいいし, 少ない色数, 4〜6色で編むこともできます. サンプルのセーターはパウル・クレーの絵の中に使われている色を参考にして色の組み合わせを考えました.

フェアアイルのセーターを編むために作られたシェットランド諸島のSpindriftという糸を使いました. 200色以上もある色の中には, 数種類の色を混ぜ合わせて作ったメランジの色もたくさんあり, 絵画のような色が表現できる美しい糸です.　

一般的なフェアアイルよりもずっと緩いゲージで編み, 軽いセーターに仕上げました. 普段フェアアイルを編んでいらっしゃる方は, ゲージの緩さにびっくりされるかもしれません. パターンと同じゲージが出せない場合は, 極細の糸を引き揃えたり, もう少し太い糸で代替してみてください. 2色の色を引き揃えると色に深みが出て, 素敵な色の組み合わせが作れるかと思います. 楽しんで編んでいただけると嬉しいです.

針

3種類の太さの輪針が必要です. ゲージに合わせて, 針のサイズを調整して下さい.

• ゴム編み用の細い針: 2.75mm/US 2/日本規格2号
• メリヤス編み用の中くらいの針: 3mm/US 2.5/日本規格3号
• 編み込み用の太い針: 3.75mm/US 5/日本規格5号もしくは6号

ゲージ

• 22目34段 = 10cm, メリヤス編み用の針を使って編んだ「メリヤス編み」を水通ししてブロッキング
• 22目27段 = 10cm, 編み込み用の針を使って編んだ「編み込み模様」を水通ししてブロッキング

水通し後に縦の長さが短くなる毛糸と, 長くなる毛糸ががあります. ゲージを取るときに水通し前と水通し後のゲージを両方メモしておくことで, その毛糸の特徴がわかり, 仕上がりサイズが予想しやすくなります.
