My wonderful sister in law requested a toque with a sideways cable. I couldn’t find anything I liked out there so decided to create my own! Picking up and knitting the stitches around the cabling can be a bit tricky, but it’s worth it in the end (and made easier by the chunky yarn). I like the extra texture created in the body of the hat by alternating regular knit stitches and knitting in the back loop, while still keeping it simple. I prefer the magic loop technique for knitting in the round, but feel free to use any preferred way of making toques.

Materials:
10.00 mm 40” circular needles or preferred needles to make hats and obtain gauge.
Cable needle or preferred needle for holding stitches.
Approximately 50 metres of the main colour for the body of the hat and 30 metres of the contrast colour for the cable. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick which is a size 6 Bulky. Be sure to check gauge if using a different size 6 Bulky as Bulky seems to differ more than other sizes of yarn.
Stitch marker to mark the beginning of round.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge:
5 stitches x 7 rows in stockinette stitch = 2”x2”

Finished size:
9.5 inches long by 9 inches wide.
