Introduction
The Pauline Socks are a creative sock project which allows for fun colorplay. The Pauline socks have a simple design, yet with a special feature: vertical stripes which are not knitted, but which are worked with a simple crochet chain stitch after finishing the sock. The sock derives its name from my youngest daughter, as this playful design reminds me of her.
The socks are worked cuff-down on a 25cm/9in circular needle. The pattern can be easily adapted to be knit using the magic loop method, or using double pointed needles. The heel construction is a heel flap.
Sizes
The Pauline socks come in 4 sizes:
- 1: sock circumference of 19cm/7.5in
- 2: sock circumference of 20cm/8in
- 3: sock circumference of 21cm/8.5in
- 4: sock circumference of 22.5cm/9in
How to pick your size: measure the circumference of your foot. Subtract 10% (around 2cm/0.8in). Choose a sock circumference that’s close to this number.
The length of the sock is adjustable to individual measurements.
Yarn
1 skein of hand-dyed sock yarn (the sample uses the colorway “confetti”, 100g/3.5oz for 420m/16.5in) and three mini skeins of sock yarn by Handmade by Veronique (75% wool, 25% nylon/polyamide), or a different sock yarn which allows to achieve the right gauge.
The sample socks require 64g/2.25oz of yarn (including the color accents) for a size 2 for a foot size 39 (EU) /8 (US). For the color accents you need less than 10g/0.4oz from each color.
Take note that changes in yarn can have an effect on the amount of yarn needed.
Gauge
32 stitches x 42 rounds per 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in in stockinette on 2.5mm needles (or needle size to obtain gauge with) after wet blocking.
