I’ve been wanting to make a sweater like this for a long while, but sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment and the right yarn and the right cable. So, when Hayley sent me a SQ of her round, soft, gorgeous Yakkity Aran in this beautiful heathered gray (Peppercorn) and I started swatching it in cables, including this traveling diamond motif, I just knew the time had come.

Peated Whisky is my perfect, Modern Aran Cardi - a boxy fit, lots of texture, cozy ribbings, and pockets. Plus, if you want to go even cozier, I’ve included an option in the pattern for a longer thigh-length version.

A striking diamond cable motif is featured on each front of the sweater, and pockets echo the cable so it continues down the body from hem to shoulder. To keep things easy, the rest of the sweater is a mix of easily memorizable double seed stitch, open cables and honeycomb.

The sleeves echo the body, featuring double seed stitch and honeycomb once again, and the deep ribbings at hem and cuff allow for some cable tails to continue down into them, one of my favorite details to play with. Armhole shaping flows into the honeycomb panel edges for a crisp line at the seam edge. The neckline is a wide crew, for a modern feel, and the deep collar and button bands add to the squishy vibe of the whole thing. With jeans, over a tunic, or on top of a dress - it’s a pretty perfect mix of classic and cozy.

Peated Whisky is knit flat, upwards from hem to armhole in one piece, and then separated and worked in three pieces to shoulder. Sleeves are knit flat and attached to body once shoulders are seamed. Button bands and collar are then picked up and knit onto body. Pockets are knit separately and sewn onto fronts at end.

• Instructions are included for altering width or length of body and/or sleeves, and for working either a hip or a thigh length version of sweater. As always, I designed and placed these cables on the sweater with modifications in mind, so altering is not difficult.
