Meet our knit Penguin. She’s cute, cuddly and very lovable. While traditionally penguins are black and white with a yellow/orange patch on the chest, we encourage you to customize your penguin however you like. Instead of black, use purple, with a lighter purple for the white and maybe pink for the yellow patch. What about greens? Or even go crazy and use a stripped yarn for the black and leave everything traditional. Play, explore and figure out what you want – there are no wrong answers – just make sure your yarns are of similar weight so the penguin maintains a consistent shape and size.

This Penguin is suitable for advanced beginner knitters and assumes an understanding of basic stitches and standard knitting terms. Our Penguin is knit flat and sewn together using a mattress stitch.

If you’re new to knitting stuffed friends, or are uncomfortable winging it without strict guidelines (that’s OK, we all need good directions sometimes to help us out) you will need approximately 45 m of medium weight black yarn, 20 m of medium weight white yarn and 12 m of medium weight yellow/orange yarn. With this yarn, use 4 mm (US size 6) needles. You will also need a small amount of white yarn for embroidering the eyes, stuffing (we use ecofil or wool) and a sewing needle to sew your penguin together. This will let you create a penguin that’s approximately 17 cm (6.5 inches) in length.

The beauty of knitting our stuffed friends is that our Penguin can be knit in any size yarn with accompanying needles. Generally we find using a size or two smaller needles than required by the yarn allows for the tightness needed when you’re stuffing your finished product.
