Pennsylvania Road Trip
We’re taking a wonderful road trip around the state of Pennsylvania, celebrating knitting and local yarn shops and American history and natural wonders and PA landmarks as we go. We hope you’ll join us on this grand adventure.
This shawl a cross between a crescent and a circle shape, with motifs based on things we’ve seen as we’ve traveled throughout the beautiful state of PA. (If you’re from our state, you’ll know that we usually say “P. A.,” not “Pennsylvania.”)
What’s the difference between the plus and misses size? Valerie is a plus size, and has often been frustrated that shawls do not fit her in the same proportions as they fit pattern models. “Regular” shawls have always felt skimpy to her. So we made this shawl in both misses and plus sizes to accommodate everyone. If you have about a 50” bust or more, you’ll probably want to choose the plus size. If your bust is slightly less than that, you might want to choose the misses size if you want a less-full shawl, or the plus size if you like things to be more oversized.
This shawl uses four different colors of fingering weight yarn. A & D are bold/dark colors that look different from each other in color but are the same intensity. C is a medium/light color, and B is a variegated or speckled yarn that coordinates with all the other yarns. We’re assuming each skein has at least 400 yds. If you are choosing to make the plus size version of the shawl, you will need a second skein of Color A.
Please, if you can, buy this pattern through your local yarn shop; we want to help them all stay in business!
Along with both misses and plus sizes, each leg contains two options for each leg of the shawl (one designed by Cynthia, the other by Valerie), setting every knitter up for a grand choose-your-own knitting adventure. Each option is a creative tribute to a landmark, or historical event, or region that can be encountered on a Road Trip around the great state of Pennsylvania.
