Pennypack Shawl
The butterfly stitch makes a wonderful fabric, and the stitch itself is rhythmic, easy to read, and addictive, which ticks all the knitting boxes for me.
I made this first with a ten stitch wide border and loved it, but wondered how it would look with a wider border. And loved that one, too. I didn’t want to choose one over the other, so the directions are written for both borders.
The shawl begins at the wide base of the triangle, and decreases are worked every right side row. Directions are given for a ten stitch border (shown in sport weight) and for a wider twenty stitch border (shown in fingering weight). Samples are shown in sport and fingering weight yarns.
As the cast on is the same number for both, you can use either weight yarn with which border you like.
You will need:
- approximately 320 yards of sport weight yarn OR 375 yards of fingering weight yarn
- US size 5 (3.75 mm) or US size 4 (3.5 mm) needle
The directions for the butterfly stitch and the shawl shaping are both written and charted.
Exact gauge is not important: use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
The samples shown are worked in Knerd String Sport in Cold Turkey (beige speckle), and in Urth Harvest Fingering in Color 14 (dark orange).
The finished measurements are taken after blocking and may vary, depending on how vigorously you block the shawl:
Wingspan:approx 48 (52)“ for size Small with side border (Medium with narrow border)
Depth at center: approx 21 (24)”
