Penzance Hat
Please note: This knitting and embellishments pattern is for the hat only.
Originally found in the Knitting Traditions Fall 2015 magazine, this is the Penzance Hat in that exact version but earlier instruction. The pattern, due to formatting difficulties, has grown to seven pages with a suggestion to only print the pages you need to carry with you for the knitting process. Hoping to remedy this situation and pare down to my original three pages.
Any wool yarn in worsted weight may be used for this hat, or a combination of wool and mohair. Make sure the wool will full (shrink) and that it has not been treated or heavily bleached, either of which can affect the fulling process. Fulling tips and techniques are discussed on my web page, under “Techniques.” You may knit the size closest to the head measurement but a good wool yarn will shrink to the appropriate size in the washing machine. Keep closely watching your piece so as not to shrink it too much!
Embellishments are a part of this pattern with two types made from the decorative brocade ribbon, to be pinned on if desired. The jaunty feather shape or the figure eight cockade. You decide which is right for you. This regal hat looks every bit as delightful without any embellishment at all. Other options may include just an embroidered ribbon trim around the band or pin on your favorite brooch. Folkloric embroidery also would suit this style amazingly. Your imagination is the only limitation.
A quick knit in solid Ambrosia Cottage fashion, this dear piece has a band to snug the head and is otherwise shaped much like the Katya pattern with the onion dome styling.
