During celebrations for Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead) in Mexico, you can often see displays of skeletons going about their daily activities. Pepe el Panadero (Baker) is one such skeleton, still riding his bicycle around the neighborhood selling bread. He’s brought plenty of pan de muerto (bread of the dead) for people to eat in remembrance of their loved ones. And of course, no Day of the Dead would be complete without the flor de cempasúchil (Mexican marigold) to guide spirits to the altars their loved ones have made in their honor.
Languages: English and Spanish
This 21-page crochet pattern contains all of the instructions and photos you will need in order to create your own skeleton with bendable arms and legs, his bicycle, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), Mexican marigolds (cempasúchil), and a basket to wear on his head. There is also an additional 10-page printer-friendly version of the pattern included. This pattern has been thoroughly tested and proofread to be easy to follow. You are welcome to sell finished objects made from this pattern.
Skill-level: Intermediate to Early Advanced
The recommended yarn/hook combo will result in a project ~11in/28cm tall. However, feel free to use your preferred yarn/hook combo. Using a thicker yarn will result in a larger finished project. The pattern is written in English using US terminology. Basic crochet techniques and stitches (magic ring, single crochet, slip stitch, chain, increase, invisible decrease, and working into front/back-loop stitches) are used in this pattern. Instructions are provided for a special stitch (the bobblet stitch), face shaping and the invisible color change.
Several special materials are used to give extra structure and stability to the project, but are optional. Instructions are provided for how to complete the project both with and without the special materials.
