Per Terras
This lace shawl is named Per Terras, from the Scots Clan MacDonald’s “Per Mare Per Terras.” The motto “Over Sea and Land” is fitting for a shawl begun at sea to be worn on land. It is an original lace pattern inspired by Celtic knots, drawn on graph paper and translated into knitted fabric. Surrounded in the first border row by thistle motifs, and edged with heathery points, this shawl reflects a knitting tradition with origins in many places, among them Scotland.
The completed and gently blocked shawl measures 28”x80” and weighs 6 ozs. A half-pound cone of Zephyr is recommended to avoid joining - or running short of - yarn. The pattern includes charts (this is not a written-out pattern) of the Celtic Knot, Scotch Thistle, and Heather Points lace patterns. Instruction for the crocheted provisional cast-on (right- and left-handed), Chart Reading, picking up stitches, and lace cast-off techniques is also included.
This is an approachable pattern, especially in chart-reading, for the knitter new to lace.
