Did you know there is a way to knit perfect stripes in the round without having the messy ‘step up’ bit (jog) at the start of each round, and without having to fuss with carrying unused colours in a scruffy float up the inside of the project, between stripes?

Self-striping pre-dyed yarns don’t always perfectly fit the size of your project, which means instead of stripes you sometimes get blobs, patches, or zigzags - which can be nice, but it’s not stripes!

Helix knitting solves both these problems. It is not a brand new technique by any means, but I think it is not as well known as it should be. You are actually working from several rows at once as you knit around the project.

This pattern which is perfect for mini-skeins or yarny leftovers requires kitchener stitch grafting to seam the crown invisibly. However a three-needle bind off could be used instead.

Sample was knit in Madelinetosh DK Twist using a 5-mini-skein set + separate contrast colour.
