I worked on this design when I went back to Europe to comfort my mum after my Dad’s passing. At the same time I’ve also got to say final goodbyes to a dear friend who unfortunately lost her fierce fight against Cancer. I realize now that it took me over 2 years to have this pattern ready for its release. It was such a sad but special time in my life and it took me quite a bit of time to get back to normal. This design incorporates straight lines (simple rib stitches), these grow into some twisted events (cables) and then back to the straight lines. Just a gentle reminder that we can control some things in life, while others are twisted beyond our control, but life goes on…

Both samples used very specific NZ yarns but any dk and worsted yarns will work. Please feel free to play around with needle sizes to get the fabric feel you like.
Samples used 4.5mm for the Outlaw bohemia gothic (worsted yarn) and 4mm for the Naturally NZ luxury (DK, 8ply)

Longer option scarf: 210cm long x 22 cm wide
Shorter option: 155cm long x 20 cm wide

Easy to adjust to length/width you prefer or find more practical.

Scarf starts with a ribbed section; the ribs will grow into cables and then will get back into ribbed section.

Scarf was designed to have the cables section around neck (when worn) but if you prefer them longer you can adjust.

However, my suggestion is to work at least 15-20cm of rib at each end and if you decide to make the ribbed section shorter you might consider adding the fringes.

Short scarf is made up: 50cm rib + 55cm in cables + 50cm rib
Longer scarf: 45cm rib + 120cm in cables + 45cm rib

Please feel free to adjust according to your preferences.
If your yarn is limited, please make sure you weigh the amount of yarn you used for the first ribbed section and allow the same for the last one.
