Periodically Unique
50p from each sale of this pattern will be donated to Free Periods to help end period poverty, both in the UK and globally.
“We need to normalise the conversation surrounding periods and end the silence and stigma that is culturally and socially entrenched. Half of the world’s population bleeds every month, so why are we too embarrassed to talk about this very normal, natural process?” – www.freeperiods.org
Let’s end period poverty, lose the stigma, and start the much-needed conversation!
Each cycle for each person who experiences menstruation is unique. This pattern is designed to reflect that, and has a recipe style format that is customisable:
- Want to use different colours for each phase of your cycle? – Do it!
- Want to have different colours for different emotions? – Do it!
- Want to knit it all in one colour? – Do it! (It looks lovely reversed)
- Want to knit a snugger or looser version? – Do it!
- Want to make your cowl into a snood? – Do it!
- Don’t experience periods, but want to knit one anyway? – Do it!
For each day of your cycle you will be knitting 4 rounds (certain patterns require 5 rounds per day) and each phase of your cycle has its own texture pattern allowing you to ‘track’ your cycle.
Every version created will be as unique as the cycle it reflects!
Yarn: 100 – 150g of fingering weight or sport weight yarn (sample shown used 108g of Sweet Fiber Super Sweet Sock 82m per 25g mini-skein in Bruin, Sketchbook, Smoke, Driftwood, and Paper Birch)
Please note that yarn usage approximations are given in the pattern for the above yarn at the gauge listed below. Your usage will differ depending on your yarn, length of cycle (which can anywhere from 21 to 45 days), and gauge.
Needles: 4mm/US #6 circular or DPNs
Gauge: 25 stitches and 32 rows per 10cm in Phase 2 pattern (blocked)
Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, changes might result in a different meterage requirement and fabric structure.
Size: Sample shown is 55cm in circumference, and 40cm long – this creates a loose fit on the model who has a 35cm neck circumference and can wear it as a snood or cowl.
Notions: cable needle, darning needle (for those pesky ends!)
