When I was first starting my career in knitwear design, I loved taking traditional lace shawl patterns from the early twentieth century and working them in heavier, woolly yarns to create blankets that amped up the sculptural qualities of the fabric. Permafrost was designed with this idea in mind, employing sinewy plant-like stitch patterns that unfurl as you knit. Worked from the center out, the circular shawl or blanket is worked in the round and—with the exception of sections 5 and 6—has a plain round of knitting between each lace round, creating a nice balance between mindless and mindful knitting. While shown as a small throw in fingering- or worsted-weight yarn, the finished size and weight of the blanket can be easily changed by exploring the use of different yarn weights; try anything from laceweight to chunky.

Construction

• Shawl is worked in the round from the center out.
• Knitted-on edging is worked flat in place of a traditional bind off.

• 1300 yards/1189 meters of fingering weight wool yarn

• 1476 yards/1350 meters of worsted weight wool yarn

Gauge

Fingering Weight Version:

• 18 stitches & 24 rounds = 4” in lace pattern after blocking

Worsted Weight Version:

• 14¾ stitches & 32 rounds = 4″/10 cm in lace pattern after blocking

Note: Allow fabric to fully relax after unpinning, before taking final measurement

One set of DPNs, one 32”, and one 40” circular (optional) in size needed to obtain gauge
