The “Petit Carré” is a fast and fun kid’s sweater or slipover worked in super chunky wool.

It was inspired by my 2 daughters, who love the thickness and the colorways of The Wool. The squares or “carrés” bring texture and give the sweater its unique character.

The sweater and slipover are worked back and forth in one piece. After you close the seams of the body (and sleeves), the neckband is made by picking up stitches around the neckline.

If you are making the slipover, you finish the armholes by picking up stitches and knitting a neat edge.

If you’re making the sweater, you can choose flipped cuffs, for a more rough look as shown in the sample pictures. If you prefer added cuffs, this option is also included in the pattern.

Sizes

For (2, 4), 6, (8, 10) year olds.

The sweater/slipover has a positive ease of approximately 20 cm / 8 in. That means it’s intended to have a loose fit.

Yarn

Slipover
(1, 2), 2, (2, 2) skein(s) of “The Wool” by We Are Knitters (100% wool; 80m / 87yds per 200g / 7oz). The sample uses the Marshmallow colorway.

Sweater
(2, 2), 2, (3, 3) skeins of “The Wool” by We Are Knitters (100% wool; 80m / 87yds per 200g / 7oz). The sample uses the Marshmallow colorway.

Gauge

6 stitches x 9 rows per 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches in stockinette.

Needles and tools

• 12 mm straight needles
• 12 mm circular needles of 40cm / 16in for the neckband (it’s also possible to use a size 10 or 11 mm), and 80cm / 32in needles or longer if you choose to add cuffs instead of flipping the cuffs.
• 15 mm straight needles
o If you’re making the sweater in size 8 or 10 yo with flipped cuffs, a 40cm / 16in straight needle will be too short. In that case: use long circular needles, or shorten the sleeves and add a cuff. This option is provided in the pattern.
• A tapestry needle for weaving in the ends
• Thick scrap yarn for closing the seams, as The Wool is not ideal for sewing.

I didn’t find testers for the slipover in sizes 6 and 10 years old, and for the sweater in sizes 8 and 10 years old. Feel free to contact me if you would like to test knit these sizes.
