Phase Three is a large, cozy top-down triangular shawl that covers the arms and shoulders, with squishy garter stitch, minimalist lace accents, an I-cord edge and an eyelet picot bind off. The shawl uses the popular technique of blending coordinating yarns to create a “fade” or “color melt” effect; however, unlike so many other fade shawls which are narrow crescents or asymmetrical triangles, Phase Three is a symmetrical triangle that will really cover your shoulders.

Measurements: 60” wingspan, 38” deep at center spine

Techniques used: Simple lace stitches, I-cord edging, Picot bind off, narrow stripes (carrying the unused yarn up the side).

Yarn: 718 yards (146g) Nerd Girl yarns Heart You Light Fingering; 100% Superwash merino wool; 490 yd/100g, or approximately 718 yd total of another fingering weight wool yarn.
Although Heart You is technically a light fingering weight yarn, either fingering or light fingering will work equally well for this project.

C1: 35 yards (7g); Genius Billionaire Playboy Philanthropist
C2: 103 yards (21g); God of Thunder
C3: 167 yards (34g); Star-Spangled Avenger
C4: 231 yards (47g); I’ve Come to Bargain
C5: 182 yards (37g); We Have a Hulk

Any combination of five variegated yarn colors should work well. To get the best fade effect, each new color should share one or two colors with the previous yarn.

Needles: US5/3.75mm needles (or size to get gauge)

Notions: Small piece of waste yarn for provisional cast on, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: Blocked: 16 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches of garter stitch on size US5 needles.
