The dramatic seventy-two steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art inspired this shawl. Even if you’re not ready to run up the steps and raise your fists above your head like Rocky Balboa, you’ll enjoy the rhythmic knitting of this pattern.

Learn something new as you use German short rows, increases, and decreases to create the ruched staircase that grows out and down the center back of the shawl. Fighter or not, you’ll feel triumphant as you end with a gentle ruffle that creates seventy-two steps along the edge of your very own Philadelphia Steps.

• Tapestry needle

Gauge: 22 sts = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette st before blocking, 18.5 sts = 4” (10 cm) after blocking
