Photography Shawl
“It was the most interesting shawl pattern I’ve ever knitted,” wrote reaung, who was one of test knitters for this shawl. (See more quotes from test knitters below.)
We had such fun photographing this shawl with my partner and made so many artistic photos to capture the depths and shadows, that I decided I would like to title the shawl after our mood of searching for visual perfection. Some knitters say that these photos reinforce the similarity of the mountain and valley folds in this three-dimensional fabric to folded origami art.
The shawl is worked sideways in one piece. The size of the shawl can be easily customised according to included instructions. Yarn requirements are provided for DK weight, but you could also use heavier yarn for even more dramatic effect. Fingering weight yarn also works. It is important to choose yarn that holds blocking well. Yarns that drape well (e.g. silk, alpaca) are less suitable for this shawl.
The shawl is reversible, but right side and wrong side are indicated for ease of pattern writing and reading. The pattern has both written and charted instructions.
Make sure you read blocking instructions to preserve the 3D structure of the the shawl. Or choose not to block it immediately after knitting (wash yarn in advance if needed).
For information about sizes, measurements and yarn requirements please check the second page of the pattern located among the photos on the left.
I asked test knitters what they would like to tell about the pattern and the finished shawl to other knitters and here are their answers:
liyu It was a pleasure to knit this. The instructions were clear, and repeats were easily memorised - perfect for social knitting. It was extremely easy to knit a custom size with a different yarn weight. The end result is stunning. I am beyond thrilled with my shawl!
hexe1isora The shawl is very nice to knit, also very fast because it is very varied and yet easy to memorize. Suitable both for warming and as a piece of jewelry.
emailhyu It’s a quick and enjoyable knit. I would definitely recommend it to other knitters.
akampa It was very easy to follow with helpful tutorials and a video. The 3D effect is actually very simple and not as complicated as it appears.
jossroll I like the mountains and valleys.
mietzimaus I like the look and my daughter also tries to get it for her own.
Sylvianetricote It is an amazing pattern, simple to knit but with a very nice twist.
