The Story

Mountain peaks and beating wings are interlocked with tridents and vertical lines to tell the story of Phrixus and his twin sister Helle’s escape from murderous stepmother, Ino.

Nephele, goddess of the clouds intervened, sending a flying, swimming (and golden!) ram to carry the twins away over the Hellespont, a narrow strait named for Helle after her tragic fall into the sea.

Phrixus is a stranded colourwork hat, worked in the round from double-layered brim to crown.
Fine black detailing is set against swathes of blue ocean and white cloud.

Sizing

Circumference: To fit a 54.5cm / 21.5” - 57cm / 22.5” head.

The double layered brim is very stretchy so I included a lot of negative ease for my head size (57cm / 22.5”) to achieve a snug yet comfortable fit. Phrixus will also fit a slightly smaller head (54.5cm / 21.5”), which still includes a good 7cm / 3” of negative ease.

Height: 22.5cm / 9” from brim edge to crown

Gauge in pattern: 10cm / 4” in stranded colourwork over stockinette stitch after blocking - 28 stitches x 33 rows

Help!

Phrixus includes a tutorial to accompany a video guide for constructing a double-layered brim if you haven’t attempted one before. There is also plenty of help with reading the charted crown decreases.

I have included my own video tutorials throughout via hyperlinks so keep your eyes peeled for any highlighted text and see the abbreviation section at the end for full written links.
