Fingerless mitts with thumb gusset, simple; a great way to use or try out fingering weight yarn. The original Piano Mitts with lacy edgging were made in elann Peruvian Baby Cashmere, an alpaca/merino/cashmere blend, which is soft, light and warm: ideal for indoor wear, though not durable for outdoor use. However, any fingering weight yarn can easily be used in either pattern, making it useful for indoor or outdoor mitts. Knit these at a looser gauge than socks for flexibility and comfort (consider sizing up a needle size or two from your sock needle size, if you have one). Leftover yarn from a pair of socks is often enough for a pair of plain and simple Mini-Mitts!

Pattern simplified and tweaked for better fit May 2008, and clarified July 2010.
