This pattern was written to accompany my ‘Learn to Knit Continental’ class, that I teach a few times a year at Wild & Woolly, in East London. The pattern and accompanying photo tutorials are not currently available elsewhere.

My intention when designing this scarf was to make a project that’s good for someone who knits with the yarn in their right hand, and wants to switch to the ‘Continental’ or ‘picking’ style of knitting, i.e. holding the yarn in the left hand.

This switch is like learning to knit all over again, as far as your hands are concerned. My advice is to make this whole scarf (apart from casting on) while holding the yarn in your left hand.

The scarf involves lots of moss/seed stitch, broken up by horizontal bands to break the monotony! Moss stitch is great for learning to knit with the yarn in the left hand, since it’s one of the most annoying stitches to knit with the yarn in your right hand, because of all the back and forth with the yarn in between every stitch. So while you could still probably knit this scarf faster with your right hand, the ease of switching between knits and purls should spur you on to keep going!
