You don’t need a pine tree or to venture outside for these knitted pine cones. Knit in the round, the pine cone scales are built as you knit. Each pine cone uses around 15 yards of worsted weight, which makes them perfect for stash busting.

Included in this pattern is a basic pattern to create pine cones as well as 3 modifications. With these modifications you can
-Lengthen your pine cone.
-Create a pine cone with frosted pine cone scales.
-Turn your pine cone into an evergreen tree.

This pattern is for you if
-You love knitting ornaments and toys in the round.
-You like knitting picots.
-You like pine cones.

This pattern may not be for you if
-You do not like knitting dense fabric in the round, such as is needed for stuffed items.
-You would rather be stranded on a desert island without knitting than knit picots.
-You do not like pine cones.

Materials
Yarn: Worsted weight
Samples for the basic pattern used around 15 yards (14 meters) per pine cone:
-Barrett Wool Co. Home Worsted Weight Bear; 100 grams, 230 yards (210 meters); 1 skein)
-Brooklyn Tweed Shelter Embers; 50 grams, 140 yards (128 meters); 1 skein)

Needle: Size US 3/3.25 mm DPNs or size needed to obtain gauge. Magic loop would work as well.

Notions: darning needle, scissors, removable stitch marker, stuffing material (personally, I like fiberfill)

Gauge: Stockinette in the round: 7+ stitches per inch (2.5 cm)
To avoid stuffing showing through, I recommend you knit this as densely as you comfortably can.

Size:
The basic pine cone is about 2 inches (5 cm) tall and 1.5 inches (~4 cm) in diameter.
Two repeats of the lengthening modification increased the height/length by 1.5 inches (4 cm).
The Evergreen tree measures about 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall and 2.25 inches (6 cm) in diameter.
