I will always have a soft spot for granny squares. Updating them with cleaner lines and a finer gauge makes them look more modern, and allows you to play with mini skeins and leftover bits for endless color fun!

This modular shawl is a perfect on- the-go project, because you can carry a few squares’ worth of yarn in your bag at all times and work on them when you have a few minutes here and there. Make it in a rustic “wooly” yarn like Harrisville Shetland to give this piece an heirloom quality, or use leftover sock yarns or mini skeins for a more contemporary flavor.

Yarn details: fingering weight, sample shown is in Shetland by Harrisville Designs (100% virgin wool; 217 yds per 50g skein)

3 skeins (650 yds) Oatmeal (MC) + small amounts of other colors totaling about 1100 yds (colors in sample are: Walnut, Delphinium, Lime, Melon, Straw, Woodsmoke, Kiwi, Aster, Lilac, Suede, Adobe, Cornflower, Goldenrod, Grass, Silver Mist)

OR 8 skeins/1750 yards total in any combination of colors

OR in fingering weight yarn: approximately 650 yards of a Main color and 1100 yards assorted colors (OR any combo of colors adding up to about 1750 yards total)
