One of the many ethnic delicacies you can find in abundance in Pittsburgh is the pierogi, a humble potato-filled dumpling that can be made in any number of flavors. You’ll find them at food trucks, on the menu at trendy restaurants, and even running the bases at Pittsburgh Pirate home games. These quick-to-knit slipper socks have a pierogi-shaped tab on the back of leg, just above the heel flap, that makes the slipper both warmer and a bit easier to pull on.

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

  • work flat and in the round,
  • pick up a stitch from the cast-on edge and work it together with a live stitch,
  • pick up stitches from along a slipped-stitch edge,
  • work basic decreases in knit and purl, and
  • use Kitchener stitch to graft live stitches.

You will need approximately 75-100 g of sport or DK weight yarn (the actual amount of yarn used will vary depending on the length of your foot). The Ross Farm yarn used in the sample may be discontinued or unavailable given that it is spun from the fleece of a particular sheep, but any of the Ross Farm sport yarns may be easily substituted.
