This cozy double knit cowl came about when a “what if” pondering crashed headlong into a “I want that” realization. The name came out of Harry Potter when this black and white fluff-ball reminded me powerfully of Ron’s pet owl.

It takes 2 skeins of 2 colors of Sirdar Alpine -- 4 balls in total. It is knit flat, blocked to 10” x 36”, then seamed. Once relaxed, it is about 8” wide. If you want to make it longer or wider, you will need more yarn.

This is a great project for those wanting to practice double knitting without worrying about maintaining a pattern on two sides. It’s a quick knit too! The sample only took me one weekend, a fast knitter could easily finish it in a day.

Techniques included in this pattern are: knitted cast-on, double knitting, and the 3 needle bind off. I have included a link to Heidi’s excellent double knitting tutorial. Knowledge of the other techniques is assumed.

If you’re new to double knitting and want to take on a challenge, this is your pattern. Keep in mind however, that it will be challenging since with this yarn it’s very difficult to see the stitches and how they lay. That being said, mistakes would be easily hidden.

I hope you have as much fun knitting this cowl as I did designing it!
