Pincord Mittens
A cozy mitten with a fun cuff detail and an all-over slipped stitch pattern that resembles the texture of corduroy. The slipped stitch pattern of these mittens makes the DK weight yarn feel extra thick, which will keep your hands nice and warm.
Designed in collaboration with Ritual Dyes for their Winter Solstice 2021 offering!
Winter Solstice Offering Kits available here!
SIZES
S (M, L, XL)
Finished Measurements
18 (19, 21.5, 23) cm / 7 (7½, 8½, 9)” hand circumference
23 (24, 25.5, 26.5) cm / 9 (9½, 10, 10½)” length (adjustable)
Choose a size that is as close to your hand circumference as possible (measure around the hand just above the thumb with a soft tape measure). These mittens are very stretchy so if you are between sizes, it’s recommended to go down in size.
Our Hemlock (green) sample is shown in size S, and our Beautyberry sample is shown in size L.
MATERIALS
Ritual Dyes Marona (DK weight / custom-milled 3-ply; 100% Cormo non-superwash wool; 225 m / 250 yds per 100g / 3½ oz)
1 skein, shown in colours Beautyberry and Hemlock
or 145 (165, 200, 220) m / 160 (180, 215, 240) yds of a similar DK weight yarn
Sizes L and XL use close to the full skein of Marona. Be prepared to unravel your gauge swatch, and if you are adjusting the pattern for a longer length, have extra yarn on hand.
Needles
3.5 mm (US 4) long DPNs OR 40 cm / 16” (or shorter) circular needle OR straight needles
3.75 mm (US 5) long DPNs OR 40 cm / 16” (or shorter) circular needle OR straight needles, AND a set of DPNs or needles in preferred style for working small circumferences (magic loop) or needle size needed to obtain correct gauge. Pattern is written for DPNs
Notions
3 stitch markers (one being unique for BOR), smooth waste yarn, tapestry needle
GAUGE
13 sts x 21 rows = 5 cm / 2” on 3.75 mm (US 5) needles in pattern worked in the round, blocked. (26 sts x 42 rows = 10 cm / 4”) Adjust needle size if needed to obtain correct gauge
NOTES
This mitten pattern is recommended for intermediate level knitters.
Mittens are first worked flat back and forth to create a small “V” shape split at the cuff, and are then joined and worked in the round. The thumb is made using the Afterthought Method.
This pattern is written for DPNs, however other tools and methods for working small circumferences in the round can be used if desired (magic loop, etc).
For the first section of the pattern that is worked back and forth, you can work with all your stitches on a single DPN, however for the larger sizes you might want to use a short circular needle or straight needles.
In the cuff section, you will see that most RS rows begin and end with a set of 2 slip stitches. This is to help the stitches roll slightly to the WS which creates a neater looking edge.
Solid, heathered, and semi-solid variegated yarns are recommended for this project. If you are using a self-striping yarn or a heavily variegated yarn, a jog may be visible on the front of your mittens. It’s not a terrible thing, but just something to keep that in mind!
All slipped stitches are worked purl-wise with the yarn held in back, unless specified otherwise.
